Air Quality and Ventilation Requirements

• HEPA filtration: High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters capable of removing ≥99.97% of particles ≥0.3 microns. Recommended

• Minimum 20 air changes per hour (ACH) 

• At least 4 ACH must be outdoor (fresh) air.

• Higher ACH may be required for trauma or transplant ORs.

• Positive pressure relative to adjacent areas. Ensures airflow is directed from the OR to surrounding areas.​

• Laminar (unidirectional) airflow from ceiling diffusers directly over the surgical field is preferred, especially in orthopedic and transplant surgeries.​
