Operating Room (OR)
Air Quality and Ventilation Requirements
-
HEPA filtration: High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters capable of removing ≥99.97% of particles ≥0.3 microns. Recommended
-
Minimum 20 air changes per hour (ACH)
-
At least 4 ACH must be outdoor (fresh) air.
-
Higher ACH may be required for trauma or transplant ORs.
-
Positive pressure relative to adjacent areas. Ensures airflow is directed from the OR to surrounding areas.
-
Laminar (unidirectional) airflow from ceiling diffusers directly over the surgical field is preferred, especially in orthopedic and transplant surgeries.
